Rimlex®/ Underhead Sealants
The Rimlex® seal is divided into three system types.
1. Underhead sealing of torsional threaded fasteners.
2. Underhead sealing of rivets, clench nuts and tubes.
3. Form in place gaskets.
Torsional Rimlex® Applications
Rimlex® is a peripheral seal, which can be applied to the underhead bearing surfaces of bespoke fasteners, or other suitable components. Rimlex® can replace copper, aluminium and other more expensive sealing washers. The Rimlex® products are flexible organic based materials. When components are assembled the material is forced into any gaps between mating surfaces to form a robust seal. Different grades of the material exhibit various properties, but fuel, oil, brake fluid and antifreeze resistant sealants are available. Some varieties exhibit excellent re-use capabilities, and even when under torsional pressure, will seal after 12 or more re-uses. In most cases Rimlex® does not significantly alter torque tension characteristics of threaded components.
Rimlex® applications are being used by Cummins Engine Co, Eaton Transmissions, Ford, JCB, Jaguar, Land Rover and Perkins Engine Co on various engine, transmission and body components.
Rimlex® Y slightly harder than other Rimlex® materials. Has high re-use capabilities and exceptional chemical resistance. This product is specifically for use in 'O' ring (SEA J2244-1 ISO 6149-1) mating hole forms.
Rimlex® B620 has also been designed for use on fastener applications. The product is reusable and is resistant to many automotive oils, antifreeze and transmission fluids (ATF up to 120°C).
Rimlex® B has been designed for use on fastener and plug applications. The product has limited reuse.
Rimlex® 4 has been designed specifically for use on cap head fasteners for hydraulic applications. The product is single use only.
Rimlex® Ultratemp has been specifically designed for high temperature applications. The material is a high temperature RTV silicon (up to 300°C) with excellent gap filling properties.
Interface Geometry
The interface geometry of mating components is critical to correct functioning and reuse of Rimlex® seal. The mating hole, as a minimum should be burr free, chamfered and/or engineered to ensure Rimlex® material is not stripped or cut away during installation. In most cases an SAE J2244-1 (ISO 6149-1) hole form is recommended. The Rimlex® plug system is a bespoke product designed to seal high pressure oil and water galleries. When Rimlex® is used on conventional flanged fasteners an underhead fillet WA900 (ISO) form U is recommended for best results.
For new applications the tightening strategy should be developed in conjunction with our application engineers. To meet torque/tension requirements, the Rimlex® seal co-efficient of friction can be modified. The products can be readily applied to most electroplated finishes as well as aluminium, brass, stainless steel and organic coatings.
Form In Place Rimlex® Gaskets
Form in place Rimlex® gaskets can be applied to a wide variety of substrates including plastic, aluminium, brass, glass, perspex and diecast parts. Components with complex shapes can be dispensed including electronic and PCB enclosures. The Rimlex® gasket can be either conductive or environmental or both. The Rimlex® gasket is applied using computer controlled multi axis dispensing equipment. The equipment can produce complex shaped gaskets on a variety of components. Gaskets can be a variety of heights, shapes and sizes and either a relatively simple single track or twin conductive and environmental on the same component. Visual and dimensional checks can be made using either laser or visual measurement equipment. The height and positional accuracy can be measured automatically at a number of points on the bead profile to an accuracy of 0.001mm.
Rimlex® LS1 has been specifically designed as a quick polymerizing compound that remains permanently flexible and waterproof after curing. Rimlex® LS1 has important low slump characteristics that allows its use as a gap filling compound. Ideal as a lip gasket for enclosures and large weather assemblies. The material is available in white, grey or black grades and all types can be over painted and are resistant to most automotive fluids.
Rimlex® C This gasket is a conductive silicon thixotropic material filled with silver-plated aluminium particles. The material has an electrical resistance of 1.0 ohm cm² maximum. Typically 50-500 milliohms cm². Ideal for electronic enclosures where maximum EMC shielding performance is required. Rimlex® C can be produced in a single or double height form, with bead diameters from 0.5 - 0.8mm. Rimlex® C exhibits good galvanic stability when used in conjunction with aluminium and zinc alloys. The product can be applied in conjunction with a non-conducting environmental gasket to give an IP6.8 rating.
Rimlex® EV001 and Rimlex® EV002 Both these soft (30 shore A) translucent environmental seals exhibit good non-slump characteristics. The EV001 material will go to 200°C and the EV002 to 150°C. Rimlex ® EV003 This environmental seal is a soft (30 shore A) self levelling material available in black or white.
